Table Tennis Wales Squad Training Diary

Starting my business in building trust and repertoire and to promote my business with the Table Tennis Association of Wales has been my goal for this project, I will use this Diary to update the situation.

I have contacts in Table Tennis so I was easily enough given work, I was asked to film the National squad training that happens once a month, from January to June. Ryan Jenkins who is Head Coach of Table Tennis Wales asked me to film his Squad Training, upload it to the Official YouTube channel which I created for them. Link below.

At the start of the year I also applied for an Internship in Japan to film the World Team Championships and be in charge of 3 streams, unfortunately I was unsuccessful.

The theme for this training video was finding the best and worst shots, whilst also at the same time try to find athletes that are not training as hard, messing around. Training sessions last 3 hours, with on average 10 tables to film with 2 people per Table, I have to film everyone equally enough and still get the theme into the video.

I immediately realised my limitations on the first day of shooting. As I was filming one table, I had seen something on another table that would have been beneficial for the video. I decided that I would need a crew and multiple cameras to get the training videos to the standard I wanted it, but with persistence I could still walk away with plenty of great footage.

The theme was "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" in terms of performance and shots.

Lighting have been a constant struggle within the building, I have yet to over come this problem, it might be unsolvable with the lack of equipment at the moment. Link Below

18th March

The theme for this session was to have a Top 5 shots which I successfully got.

At the end of the session I was approached by Lesley O'Connell who is apart of the committee for Table Tennis Wales, she offered my me to do a stream in June and future events for Table Tennis Wales.

I accepted the offer and I was successful in getting a client for my business. Link Below

BTTAD Grantham Weekend Diary

On the 15th March, I am working for the BTTAD (British Table Tennis Association for the Disabled), at The Butterfly Michael Hawkesworth Championships 2014, I will be a camera operator and my duty will be to film the matches on the show table and make a showreel. The footage I capture and edit will be uploaded to the BTTAD YouTube Channel. On this post I will keep a detailed diary of how the event goes.

There will be pictures and videos added to the blog. The experience is also under my company Grizzly Productions, my plan to network is to hand out my business cards and try to meet as many people as possible. Dave Cochrane contacted me in November 2013 having seen my highlight reel for the Six Nations that I did.

Day 1
Leaving Cardiff at 10:45, I arrived at Grantham two hours early arriving at 2PM, this is a day before the event I met with Michael Loveder who was the official photographer at the event, upon greeting we exchanged business cards and talked about projects we worked on. He has been a photographer for the BTTAD for a long time, he has been a good contact made since he is well connected with the Great British Squad. Later we met Dave Cochrane who is in charge of organising the event, he offered me to take me to the hall where the event will be taking place, when we arrived to the location I inspected the hall, the conditions were difficult but suitable. I had noticed there as another place where we could film, a bigger hall, with better lighting conditions and also a balcony so I could set up my camera in a high place and I mentioned that it would be better to film there and benefit the athletes with more space, unfortunately they did not take my advice.

We started planning the layout of the hall and where we could put the show table. The hall was small with limited space where we needed to fit 16 Courts inside. I was placed in Court 1 with ample space and a table to increase the height. I was satisfied with the layout and prepared for filming the next day.

Day 2

On the second day I encountered several problems. The first being that the layout had been changed without being told, the size of the showcourt changed and I was given a smaller area with less flexibility. Thankfully I had come prepared with an extension cable so I could continuously charge my batteries, I had a limited amount of SD cards, so I continued to fill my card, by the end of the first day I had gathered 75GB worth of footage. Throughout the day I was asked by a lot of people where the footage will be uploaded, I told them where and also gave them my business card if they required any services.

Day 3

On the 3rd day, I repeated the same process as yesterday, although whilst I was filming, a staff member moves the table I was filming on and the footage is ruined, I asked what the meaning was behind moving the table, and it was to retrieve the trophies in the storage behind me. I missed 3 matches because they had the wrong keys, what I could salvage from the rest of the day saved the shoot.
